Fat is colored as a bad word
But it is not a bad word to meI’ll look on the TV at any given time of day, and there will be a pretty thin girl
Or a muscular man
And they’ll be smiling and laughing and discussing the newest diet
Drink
And exercise fad
And promoting it to the masses, and despite the sheer numbers of companies similar to them, they run a successful business, because nobody in their right mind would want to be fatRight?
I grew up, am growing up in a world where girls and boys like me are told that they are inherently worth less than other girls and boys just because of their weight
I am living in a world where saying, “you look so skinny!” and “you don’t look fat” are supposed to be accepted as complimentsWhen I say, “I am fat”, the very first response I am sure to get is “No you aren’t, you’re beautiful”
First of all, you would be correct
I am gorgeous, but you are wrong in that it is undeniable that I am fatWhat you say to me, in that moment, is an echo of what media and society has been forcing down the throats of boys and girls like me for years, it’s a mere whisper compared to the roar of
FAT IS UGLY
That is ever present
Ever growing
Ever hurtful
And completely wrongFat is not ugly
Fat is just fatI want to be able to live in a world where the fat girl suffering an eating disorder isn’t discredited as being a liar, because she is fat and therefore cannot be suffering from starving or purging because the pounds don’t roll off like waves
I want to be able to watch TV and see the fat boy not be made into the butt of a joke by having him play the slob character, or sometimes even worse, by the movie’s end have him drop the weight and win the girl because being skinny is the only way he can ever be loved
And since childhood, we’re taught it’s the only way any of us will be loved
But I am here to tell you something, and you repeat this message to your friends, family, and especially your children when they come home for the first time confused and hurt because some other kids on the playground mockingly called them “fatty fatty”, because I sure as hell wish someone had said it to me when I was small:
Yes, you are fat
But your weight does not cheapen your valueYes, you are fat, and handsome, and beautiful, and brilliant, and kind, and every needle-sharp insult this world throws your way will make you stronger
Yes, you are fat
And that is nothing to be ashamed of
